Which Braun cassette fits my shaver?

A Braun shaver is a motor that lasts and a foil that does not. Eighteen months, says Braun, and then the foil has worn thin enough to shave less and nick more, and the fix is a cassette that clicks on in a second. The trouble is the name. Braun has sold a Series 7 since 2010 and the Series 7 in the shop today is not the Series 7 in your bathroom, and the cassettes for the two are different parts that look the same in the picture.

Read the model number off the shaver, 7865cc or 3040s or 9477cc, usually on the back under the head. Pick it, and the sheet gives you the cassette code Braun says fits, and the pack. The letter after the number is the colour, S for silver, B for black, M for the metal finish, and it does not change the fit.

2Two Series 7s, two Series 5s, two Series 3s

Braun reuses a series name across designs and the cassettes do not cross. The Series 7 of 2008 to 2019, the 720s to 799cc and the 7840s to 7899cc, takes the 70S; the Series 7 with the 360 degree flexing head from 2020 on, the 7020s, 7071cc and the long codes beginning 70-, 71- and 72-, takes the 73S, which Braun has since renamed 74S. The Series 5 of 2014, the 5020s to 5197cc, takes the 52S or its black twin the 52B; the EasyClean Series 5 of 2020, the 5018s and the 50-, 51- and 52- codes, takes the 53B, now sold as 54B, and the Series 6 of the same design takes the same cassette, now sold as 64B. The Series 3 splits at the model number: the plain 300s, 301s, 310s and 310BT take the 21B; the Series 3 ProSkin and 3+ (3000s to 3090cc) and the older 320s to 390cc take the 32B or 32S. Braun’s own pages say the renamed cassettes fit the old shavers: the 74S fits generations 70, 71 and 72, the 54B the Series 5 generations 50 to 52, the 64B the Series 6 generations 60 to 62.

3Series 9: four codes on one shaver

The Series 9 has had 92S and 92B, then 92M, then 94M, then 96M, and Braun’s service page for the current type lists all of them. The first Series 9 of 2012 shipped with the 92B; the 92xx and 93xx with the 92S or 92M; the Series 9 Pro (94xx and 95xx) with the 94M, which Braun says also fits the plain Series 9; and the Series 9 Pro+ (96xx) with the 96M, which Braun says is compatible with every Series 9 generation. So on a Series 9 of any age the 96M fits by Braun’s own word, and the table gives the code the manual for your own shaver prints.

4Where the numbers are

Three numbers, and two of them matter. The model (9385cc, 7071cc, 50-M1000s) is on the body of the shaver and on the box. The type, four digits such as 5793, is printed on the shaver and on the cover of the manual, and it is how Braun’s own service pages are organised: one page per type, listing every model of that type and the shaving system it takes. On the newer long codes the first two digits are the generation (70-, 71-, 72- for Series 7; 50-, 51-, 52- for Series 5; 60-, 61-, 62- for Series 6), which is the language Braun’s head pages speak. Find your model in the table; if it is not there, the type number on the manual cover finds Braun’s service page, linked at the foot.

5The colour letter, and cassette or block

The letter after the number is the colour and nothing else: S is silver, B is black, M is matt silver, and Braun’s manuals pair them, 32S/32B, 52S/52B, 70S/70B, 92S/92B. A cassette is the foil and the cutter in one piece that clicks off and on, and that is the Series 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and CoolTec. The Series 1 (11B, 10B, 30B), the 2011 Series 5 530s to 590cc (51S) and the WaterFlex (51B) have a separate foil and a separate cutter block, and Braun says to change both at once. The Series X has a one-piece blade head, the XT20; Braun’s newest shaver, the NEVO, has its own heads, NEVO-S and NEVO-B; the cruZer has a combi pack, 20S.

6Eighteen months

Braun’s line is on every head page and in every manual: replace after about 18 months, or when worn, for 100 per cent of the shave. A worn foil shaves less and nicks more, and the cassette costs a fraction of the shaver. The Series 9 Pro+ and the NEVO also have a ProComfort head, 94PS, which is a skin attachment and not the cassette; do not buy that thinking it is the blade.
