Which battery does my car key fob take?

The car key dies in a Tesco car park in the rain and the dealer wants a fortune to put a battery in it that costs under a quid. The battery is a coin cell with a code stamped on it, and the whole trick is knowing the code before you prise the fob open. Most cars take a CR2032. Enough take a CR2025, a CR2016 or a CR2450 that guessing gets you a battery that rattles, or one that will not let the case shut.

Pick the make and the model. The sheet gives you the code, says whether it came from the maker’s own handbook or from a parts seller, and links the pack. Open the fob with a coin in the slot or the spare key blade, note which way up the old one sits, and put the new one in the same way. Two minutes. The dealer can keep the fortune.

2CR2032, CR2025, CR2016: what the code means

CR is the chemistry, lithium. The first two digits are the width in millimetres, 20 for all three. The last two are the thickness in tenths of a millimetre: a 2032 is 3.2 millimetres thick, a 2025 is 2.5, a 2016 is 1.6. Same width, different thickness, and the thickness is why a 2025 in a 2032 fob rattles and a 2032 in a 2025 fob will not let the case close. A CR2450 is 24.5 wide and 5 thick, the fat one, in the newer Toyota, Kia and Hyundai smart keys. A CR2430 is just as wide and 3 thick, close enough to fool you and not close enough to fit: older Volvo keys take it. A CR1620 is a small one, 16 wide, in the plain remote keys of older Peugeots and Citroëns. Fig. 1 has four of them cut through the middle, drawn to the same scale.

3If your car is not in the table

Every row here comes from the maker’s own manual, and the table grows as people look cars up. If yours isn’t there yet, the handbook usually has it, under keys or remote control, in the glovebox or on the maker’s website as a PDF. Usually. Škoda, SEAT, Cupra, Renault and Dacia handbooks, and the newer Vauxhall ones (the Corsa from 2019, the Astra from 2021, the Mokka from 2021, the Grandland), tell you to fit a battery of the same type as the old one and stop there: a page of instructions and no number. For those, and for anything else missing, open the fob. The code is printed on the battery. If the table has your car wrong, write in with the handbook page and the row changes.

4Two batteries, keyless cars, and the card

Some keyless fobs take two cells, and some later keys take one fat CR2450 where the old key took a CR2032: Toyota, Kia and Hyundai all made that swap at a facelift, so the years column matters. Peugeot and Citroën changed the plain remote key from a CR1620 to a CR2032 around 2019 and 2020, partway through a model, so those rows go by build date. A key card is different again: Tesla’s has no battery at all, and the row says so. If the car still will not start with a new battery, the key usually has a slot or a spot on the steering column where it works without one. That is in the handbook too.

5Branded or not

A lithium coin cell is a lithium coin cell. Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic, Varta, Maxell and the Amazon own brand all make a CR2032 that fits and lasts years in a fob. What matters is the date on the pack (lithium cells keep ten years, not twenty) and a pack size that does not leave you with nine spares. Four is plenty.
