What batteries does it take?

Christmas morning, the pad for the Xbox wants two AAs and the drawer has nine AAAs and a 9 volt from a smoke alarm that went off in 2019. Every house has that drawer. The things in this table are the things that fill it: game controllers, video doorbells, thermostats, smoke alarms, the tags on the keys, the bathroom scales, the remote that fell down the back of the settee.

Pick the kind of thing, then the device. The sheet gives the size and how many, says when the maker insists on a particular chemistry (Blink cameras want lithium AAs and sulk on alkaline), and links the pack. Where a device has a sealed battery you cannot change, the row says that too, so you can stop looking for the hatch.

2AA, AAA, 9 volt, coin cells, and the odd one

AA and AAA are the round ones; the AAA is the thin one. A 9 volt is the square one with the clip, in older smoke alarms. Coin cells (CR2032 and its cousins) are in anything flat: trackers, scales, car keys, kitchen thermometers. CR123A is the stubby camera battery that some alarm sensors and doorbells use, and it is the one the corner shop will not have, so buy two.

3Alkaline, lithium, rechargeable

Alkaline is the normal AA. Lithium AAs cost more, weigh less, last longer in the cold and do not leak, which is why outdoor cameras specify them and why the maker’s warranty can hang on it. Rechargeable AAs run at a slightly lower voltage and some devices (older smoke alarms, cheap toys with a low-battery cut-off) complain; most things are fine, and for a controller that eats a pair a fortnight they pay for themselves by spring.

4Sealed, built in, do not go looking

Phones, most modern remotes with a charge port, the PlayStation pad, the newer Nest thermostats: the battery is inside and the answer is a cable. The table says ‘built in’ and stops there, because the alternative is you with a screwdriver and a warranty in bits.

5The smoke alarm

The modern ones have a sealed ten-year lithium cell and you replace the whole alarm when it chirps; the date is on the side. The older ones take a 9 volt, or two or three AAs, and the handbook on the row says which. If one is chirping at three in the morning it is the battery, and no, it will not wait until Saturday.
