which fits?

Which battery, which bag, what size, how many. Look it up, then buy the right one once.

Sheet 21 · Travel

Will my bag fit?

There is a metal frame at the gate and a person beside it who does not care that the bag was fine on the way out. Every airline has its own frame, two frames usually, one for the bag you get for nothing and one for the bag some fares include and the rest charge for, and the numbers differ by a centimetre here and three there, which is exactly the margin a soft bag loses when you pack it. Nobody can remember them all. Nobody should have to.

Measure the bag, packed, wheels and handles included, and put the three sides in. The sheet checks it against every airline on the list, in whichever way round it fits, and says free, cabin bag or hold for each, with the airline’s own page and the date it was read under every row. If it fails the one you are flying with, the sheet names the size that passes everywhere.

The bag

Leave at 0 if you do not know. Most free bags have no weight limit; many of the bigger ones do.

Measure the outside, wheels and handles included, with the bag packed. A soft bag measures bigger full than empty, and the sizer at the gate does not care which.

1 of 40airlines take it free under the seat

A bag of 45 × 36 × 20 cm goes under the seat for nothing on 1 of the 40 airlines below that have a separate free bag, into the locker as a cabin bag on 44 (included on some fares, paid on others, and on the full-service airlines simply included), and into the hold on 6. A bag of 35 × 20 × 10 cm goes under the seat on every airline here that has a free bag; one of 40 × 35 × 18 cm goes in the locker on every airline that prints a locker bag size.

51 airlines, each from its own baggage page on the date in the sources box. Centimetres, in the order the airline prints them; the sheet compares sides largest to largest, so the order does not matter. “Free” means your bag fits the allowance every passenger gets; “Cabin bag” means it fits the bigger bag that some fares include and the rest charge for; “Hold” means it fits neither and goes in as checked baggage.

2Two bags, two frames

The free bag is the one that goes under the seat in front: a rucksack, a big handbag, a laptop bag. It is the only bag the cheapest fare includes on the low-cost airlines, and the frame for it is small. The cabin bag is the wheeled one that goes in the locker, and whether you may bring it depends on the fare: included with a priority or flexible fare, or on the full-service airlines, and a separate charge on the basic fares of the rest. A bag that passes as a cabin bag is no use to you if your ticket does not include one, so the table says on which fares it is, in the airline’s own words.

Not every airline is here. Play, Eastern Airways and Blue Islands stopped flying in autumn 2025 and have none, and the sheet does not copy a newspaper’s version of an airline that will not show its own page. Etihad and Cathay Pacific no longer print a frame anywhere but inside a baggage calculator, so their rows carry the calculator’s answer for a London flight in Economy and say so; Virgin Atlantic’s numbers now live in a help centre article rather than a baggage page.

3How the sheet decides

A bag goes into a sizer any way up, so the sheet sorts your three sides largest first, sorts the airline’s three largest first, and compares them pair by pair. If each of yours is no bigger than theirs, it fits. That is what the frame at the gate does. What the frame does not do is squash: a soft bag that bulges past the line stays past it, and the airlines’ pages say the dimensions include wheels, handles and pockets, so measure the outside of the packed bag and not the label on the inside. Weight is checked on the bigger bag and sometimes on the small one; put the packed weight in and the sheet flags a bag that fits the frame and fails the scale.

4What changed in 2025

In 2025 the European airlines’ trade body agreed a common minimum for the free bag, so the smallest frame is now the same shape across the big European carriers, and Ryanair made its free bag bigger in the same year. That is why an old underseat bag bought to the previous Ryanair size now fits with room to spare, and why a bag bought abroad to a different airline’s old frame may not. The table is re-read when an airline changes its page; the date under each row is the day it was last read.

5Which bag to buy

If you fly the low-cost airlines on basic fares, buy a bag cut to the free frame of the airline you fly most, and the ledger above prints the size that passes every free frame on the sheet, which is smaller than most people expect because one or two airlines draw a thin box. Soft, with a flat bottom, and a strap that goes over the handle of a wheeled case for the trips when you do pay. If you fly with a cabin bag included, the 55 by 40 by 20 case is the European locker size, and the table shows the long-haul airlines whose frame is narrower than that. A case advertised ‘cabin size’ with no numbers on it is cut to some airline’s frame, and the listing will not tell you which.

6Where to get it
